Lead Counsel
As Lead Counsel, Lauren Sullivan leads the legal team supporting the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute. In this role, she develops and executes legal and IP strategies, manages risk, advises the board and leadership team, leads complex transactions, and provides strategic and operational support to achieve the institute’s mission.
Lauren brings over 20 years of corporate, transactional, R&D, and commercial legal and leadership experience in the biotechnology industry. Prior to the Gates Medical Research Institute, Lauren was Deputy Director, Associate General Counsel at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, focusing on complex biotechnology transactions and partnerships for the foundation’s biotech accelerator and discovery groups. Prior to BMGF, she was a partner at Washington D.C. and New York based law firm Epstein, Becker & Green where she supported life science company governance and transactions. At EBG, Lauren was acting general counsel for a number of biotechnology companies, creating infrastructure and building scalable teams in preparation for the biotechs’ first product. Prior to EBG, Lauren led the legal departments of Bay Area biotechs Dermira and Medivation in preparation for their respective acquisitions and held senior legal roles at Genentech, Boehringer Ingelheim and Pfizer. Prior to practicing law, Lauren worked in clinical research and drug development.
Lauren earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Widener University and a Juris Doctor from Widener University School of Law. She is licensed to practice law in Connecticut.
